Probably the best restaurant in McHenry County, especially since Region has nosedived. 1776 is elevated and refined dining while being inviting and comfortable. The service was fantastic. This place is not suburban and was a nice escape. Not a single pretentious tone to be found. Our server was energetic and helpful. The flow of service was very good and intentional. There were not many things that could have been done better to improve our experience, minor timing and training blemishes that would make the service elite. The food is great quality and prepared well. Nothing about it was earth shattering about the menu but met our desires. The sunchokes were meh in that something was missing with the flavor and texture, a simple chunky sea salt would have nailed it. My wife loved the bone marrow and the use of mushrooms was excellent, really bringing up the flavor. There just wasn't as balanced a portion as I would have liked. My duck confit was excellent all around. My wife loved the lamb and said the flavor brought her back to Palestine. This is where my comment on pairing comes in. Brussel Sprouts aren't really a thing in the middle east, so if the chef was teasing that flavor profile, a better match would have truly perfected the dish. All was very good and met or exceeded the value. The extensive drink list was a pleasant surprise - three pages of whisky/eys for example. And the smores pie was ridiculous in that it was extremely fun and way too big, ha. I would have been happy with a quarter portion, but my kids will enjoy the rest.
The ganache could have been less sweet and darker but was still fantastic. I was prepared to spend $300 on dinner, so when, after tip, it was just over $200, I was quite surprised, and it really put a cherry on top. We can't wait to come back.
