The Royal is operated by James Hickson, who has a solid hospitality background having learned his trade at well-loved restaurants and gastropubs including St John, Great Queen Street, The Canton Arms and Moro. James is hands-on at the pub, overseeing the relaxed yet lively atmosphere, friendly service and sophisticated food and drink. The kitchen is led by head chef, Andrew Taylor-Gray, who has previously worked at Petersham Nurseries, Hix and The Canton Arms.The Royal has been included in the Michelin Guide since February 2020 with Bib Gourmand status, which we have maintained ever since.A welcoming gastropub for locals and visitors alike in St. Leonards-On-Sea and Hastings, low-key and down-to-earth, The Royal occupies an historic corner site right opposite St. Leonards Warrior Square station.

We are a country Gastropub owned by farmers. Our farm supplies the beef, lamb and pork and we source other ingredients from local producers where we can. Our small seasonal menu changes regularly reflecting what is available in our area. We pride ourselves on being very much a country pub, offering freshly prepared seasonal food and a warm welcome. We also love offering locally produced drinks, such as gins, rums, ales and wines, giving you the complete taste of Sussex. Our weekend menu is our delicious Asado Grill. A slightly reduced but very tasty BBQ menu, where everything is cooked on our outdoor grill. We advise to book in as we get very busy!

Callenders is a modern , casual style dining bistro. From a romantic meal for two, to a celebration dinner for forty. The best of local produce cooked to order for you. The surroundings are relaxed and easy going. Large potted plants occupy the free spaces and original water-colours by local artists hang on the walls. Table tops are bare and minimalist set with condiments, cutlery and fresh cut flower stems. Old dishes make a fresh return, and modern classics like Thai-Style Chicken sit comfortably along-side Braised Beef Cheeks with roast potatoes and gravy.Steaks are good too and a full Char-grill section on the menu features locally shot Venison and a selection of beef cuts; T bone, Fillet and Sirloin. As you would expect all desserts and pastries are made in house, with a definite focus on classic British desserts, steamed Treacle Sponge, Crème Brule, Apple Tart, Queen of Puddings and a really beautiful creamed rice dessert served with a mango sorbet are often on the menu.

Halfway between Hastings and Rye, The Cove is the perfect stop after a walk across the local beaches and coastal paths of East Sussex. We have a fire for the winter nights, a garden for summer days, and a friendly bar waiting to welcome you. Originally a hotel, the building sat empty for several years until 2022, when the Cove was renovated, restored and reopened with a new lease of life. Sonia was our waitress - she was absolutely fantastic. She was on top of everything and so polite and interesting. The cheese soufflé was outstanding - as was the ribeye steak along with spinach and chunky chips. Yumbo!!! The Rose wine was delicious too - just the inexpensive one at the top of the rose list. Try it

We didn't eat here just went in to watch the football. Nice atmosphere, we had a decent view of a screen, staff were helpful when there was an issue with the OpenTable reservation. Would watch a match again here if we're in the area. Food looked nice but can't comment on it as we didn't eat (but review wouldn't let me not put a score for food).
