Friedmans was named after the famous economist Milton Friedman who popularized the phrase, “there ain’t no such thing as a free lunch”. This phrase has gone on to be used in science, economics, finance, statistics, technology, sports, & now food. There is only one way to describe it: Classic Russia in the heart of New York. The history of Russian Samovar starts well before the restaurant itself. Originally Jilly's Canteen, and owned by a friend of Frank Sinatra, Jilly Rizzo, Samovar was the go-to hot spot for Sinatra and The Rat Pack. In 1986, Roman Kaplan, founder of Russian Samovar acquired the property and was joined in 1987 by friends and business partners: Legendary dancer Mikhail Baryshnikov and Nobel Award Winning poet Joseph Brodsky. Baryshnikov's baby grand piano is still used daily by our performers and guests can still request the Brodsky table, where the legends used to sit and drink away the hours. Guests of private events also enjoy our private dining room, where Baryshnikov filmed Sex in the City.​Samovar has remained a celebrity hangout over the years. We've been lucky enough to feature impromptu shows by Liza Minelli and rumor has it that Mel Brooks adapted The Producers to film while sitting at our bar.

    We were seated quickly upstairs for our 4:45 reservation. Drinks came quickly and ordered spring rolls as appetizer which also came quickly and were very delicious came with sour cream avocado and salsa. Everyone tried and enjoyed. I got the short rib burger special with fries and was very good. Wife got chicken pot pie decent portion size and she enjoyed. Son got American burger (bun was thin and did not hold the toppings - fell apart) but was very good. His GF got chicken fingers again good she wanted sweet potato fries but not offered as a sub. Not sure why restaurants just don’t add with a charge but wasn’t a big deal. Service was great and place was very busy. I would definitely go back and recommend. We were off to Wicked for 6:30 and had more than enough time.

    1000% Recommend RTR. The beef stroganoff is EXCELLENT. The burger w brie AMAZING. Staff was wonderful, very present but not rushed. Try the black tea with cherry compote. Thank you RTR! 😍

    It was absolutely lovely! A very quaint and charming lunch in the Book Room at a table for 2 framed by the arched window! Our lobster bisque, grilled octopus, chicken club sandwich & Cobb salad were the perfect lunch for a wintry walk through midtown! Just perfect! We will be back next weekend!
