Established in 1999 and proudly celebrating twenty years in Borough Market this year, fish! was the first restaurant of its kind in London. Our concept is simple – providing our customers with the best quality fish, cooked in front of you, in simple and classic ways. Since 1999 our focus has never changed, quality and responsible sourcing is still our main concern…we just look a bit more fancy now! Our central location in Borough Market means that London’s best produce is right on our doorstep. We are proud to say that we source most of our produce from Borough Market itself, and our fish is delivered daily from our very own fishmonger, Jarvis, which is renowned for its extensive range of the freshest fish and seafood. We're also winners at the National Fish & Chip awards too!

Winner of the UK's Best Independent Restaurant of the Year, 2014. Pat 'Pops' Newland has been serving authentic British fish and chips in London since 1945, and from this he has recreated a restaurant serving one of Britain's best-loved dishes in a friendly setting, surrounded by authentic 1940s/50s memorabilia lovingly curated by Pops himself. Our menu includes sustainably-caught mouth-watering fresh fish cooked in crunchy batter, served with golden chips and classic mushy peas, prepared on the premises by our onsite fishmonger. You can also try the seafood platter, pies, chicken, or traditional east end classics like jellied eels, followed by traditional, indulgent English desserts such as sticky toffee pudding and apple pie. Drinks vary from fruit juices and traditional ginger ale, to carefully-picked wines and locally-sourced beers.

Poppies in Hanbury Street was Pop’s first restaurant and the one where the journey began. The retro-diner and takeaway is close to Pop’s heart as it brought 70year old Pat out of retirement. It fulfilled his lifelong dream of opening an East End chippie and a desire to offer customers a taste of the old East End.

Poppie’s is renowned for authenticity – and it’s little wonder, with born and bredEast-end proprietor, Pat ‘Pop’ Newland, at the helm. Pop’s career in the fish and chip business started in 1952 when, aged 11, he got a job on Roman Road cutting up copies of The Daily Mirror to wrap fish and chips in. With decades of experience behind him, ‘Pop’ founded Poppie’s. The shops are filled with retro memorabilia from Pop’s childhood, The uniforms channel a 1950s vibe, and the music is tailored to each shop. Dining in one of Pops restaurants is an experience with retro vibes and iconic looks from the decades.     The experience was very good. The food was excellent, and the service from the waiters was exceptional. The atmosphere of the place was great. Very happy with the experience and highly recommended.

    We had a very lovely late lunch at this restaurant. The steak was well cooked, and very flavoursome, however a small point to feedback is that I would have preferred the steak to have been served whole, instead of individually sliced….personal preference though, and it was still very tasty. Lovely ambience and attentive staff. Would recommend and return. Thank you!

    We were so lucky to be served by JEMIMA (Jae)! Right since I opened the entrance door, I could feel her warmth: sweet, extremely friendly, and genuinely handy. I had booked the second festive menu and the bar seating (thinking that it could have enhanced our experience). Then, I discovered that JEMIMA reserved a big table upstairs, as she knew we expected quite a few plates. Moreover, she made sure that everything arrived on time, one round after the other.
