Le Coq is James Beard Best Chef finalist Tara Monsod’s new wave French steakhouse. Inspired by the modern Parisian culinary landscape, chef Tara reinvents classic dishes through her signature approach, blending cross-cultural references and ingredients for a distinctly SoCal expression of French cuisine. Bright touches and hyper-seasonal products ground the menu with San Diego style, while nods to chef Tara’s Southeast Asian background are interwoven throughout. Located in downtown La Jolla in a 1930’s historic building with exposed brick walls, steel trusses, and a barrel-vaulted ceiling. Into this storied shell is inserted a posh 1970’s diner club.

Named after La Jolla’s popular Open Aire Farmer’s Market, Bistro du Marché allows chef Diot to work closely with farmers to incorporate the finest local flavors into his dishes.     Food and service could not have been better. Food was beautiful and delicious. The bronzino with potato scales was fabulous. Service perfect...but my date thought they maybe needed an additional server....since it was Thanksgiving week I let that slide a little. I would have preferred less light in the restaurant, but since it is a bistro and some people like more light...it is just a personal preference. Overall a great night to celebrate a birthday.

    We went here for brunch. The host gave us warm greetings and the server was polite and kind. Food options were great on the 3 course meal menu and portions were generous. The server didn’t give us a hard time for sharing my 3 course meal with my 8 year old and it was so much food we still had leftovers. Service was on the slow side but we didn’t mind because that meant more time to enjoy the beautiful view and the ambience. It was also nice that valet was free if you eat at the restaurant. After the meal, we walked around the beautiful resort grounds and the area outside of the main building that had a Christmas tree and outdoor games.

    AMAZING first experience at Le Coq! They are serious about their cocktails- and it shows! They have an array of cocktails with a variety of liquors- so there is definitely something for everyone (even a selection of cocktails!). The food was French with exquisite presentation. We ate the steak tartare, onion tart, pork croquette and baguette with chicken skin butter! WOW! Everything had intense flavors that complemented each other! For entrees, my husband and I shared the Australian Wagyu steak (large, like 16oz I think), steak & frites and the lamb. The night took a spectacular turn with the chef herself came out with a couple entrees! It was such a pleasure to meet such a badass chef! Overall, we were thrilled with our first experience and can’t wait to go back! The atmosphere was sexy/swanky, and despite loud noise levels, a good time was definitely had by all!
