The Woollen Mills has been one of the most iconic buildings and businesses in Dublin for over one hundred years, and to have taken over this site is a serious privilege. Much like our award-winning sister restaurant next door, The Winding Stair, we feel like we are custodians of something very special... a piece of history (James Joyce worked here, how unbelievable is that?!) and we must do it proud! The Winding Stair Bookshop & Café became a famous Dublin landmark in the 1970s and 1980s. Named after the Yeats poem and in honour of its winding staircase, it is overlooking the river Liffey, with an iconic view of the Ha'penny bridge. As a popular meeting place for writers, musicians and artists, it was a well known hub for debate and creativity with many poems written, novels penned and movies shot within its walls. In 2006, Elaine Murphy brought this much-loved spot back to life as a restaurant, championing seasonal, Irish produce. The bookshop, located on the ground floor, was retained, as were many of the old bookshelves, photos and memories. The room retains its timeless charm with stripped wood tables and floors, and Bentwood café chairs.The view remains as quintessentially Dublin as ever.The food is good, old-fashioned home cooking, with produce sourced from artisans within the island. Really enjoyed visiting. The food is slightly overpriced in and of itself but more than made up for by the experience in terms of ambience. Overall, first time going but not the last!

Very good overall. Really was 😊. Only thing I had is while we were at the end of the restaurant there was a constant cold draft, yes we are in winter after all, and you could really feel it, but bar that, staff were friendly and food was very good. Thanks.

Enjoyed a lovely meal in Stir after a matinee show in the nearby Bord Gais theatre. The food was really good and the service from the restaurant manager and our lovely friendly waitress was excellent.
