In 1688, Joseph Haviland built a tidewater gristmill that provided the locally-grown grains to a nearby bakery that supplied farmers and tradesmen with bread. It was the first public oven in New York State. Haviland’s Old Grist Mill and the public bakery were community gathering places for two centuries. Inspired by Joseph Haviland’s noble efforts, the Haviland Kitchen & Bar has been established for our neighbors. This restaurant offers a delightful dining experience before or after a performance at BAM. It’s a few blocks from BAM. There is outdoor seating. We started with spicy guacamole while the mixed ceviche was a hit with our granddaughter, who couldn't get enough of it (it wasn't quite to my taste). Our granddaughter enjoyed her steak tacos, and my pork tostada—which came as a pair—was delicious. My husband's mixed tacos were also delicious. The atmosphere is charming and the staff are attentive. We recommend this place for a delicious meal in a cozy space.
