Showcasing a unique blend of clean, fresh and healthy Asian food, dishes on Head Chef Yam Bahaeur Gurumg’s menu are all prepared from scratch using traditional Chinese, Thai, Malay and Singaporean disciplines. In the Royal Lancaster Hotel, the Nipa Thai restaurant has been named after the original Nipa Restaurant in the Landmark Hotel in Bangkok. Lots of teak panelling, traditional Thai furnishings and artefacts lend an authentic air. All the staff dressed in traditional Thai costume are from Thailand - even the lady chefs. This authentic Thai restaurant is one of the first 15 recipients of the 'Thai Select' award - this award has been described as being the first ever Michelin-style award for Thai restaurants proven to be performing to the highest standards of quality and cuisine, and is awarded by the Thai Government. We think this award sums up Nipa Thai rather nicely. What's cooking? Kai Haw Bai Toey - deep fried marinated chicken in pandanus leaves, Kaeng Kiew Warn Kai - chicken in green curry soup, also recommended the Nipa platter - a selection of the chef's special Thai starters.

The dark wood and gold signage and pots of bamboo flanking the entrance are easily spotted – you’re drawn in by a warm welcome from traditionally dressed staff and the promise of a tasteful and comfortable interior. The immaculately laid out dining room is decorated in earth tones, which compliment the antique-looking Thai artefacts, silk panels and leather banquettes. My veggie friend came to see me, and specifically requested a Deliveroo from Mali Vegan Thai, like last time. She wanted to repeat the experience, as she’d enjoyed it so much. I said we can do better than that - let’s go there! So we did. She found the place enchanting and the food out of this world delicious, as did I. It’s a real find.

Good food, but quite a limited menu. I tried the Green Curry with chicken, which was excellent. My wife tried the fermented fish, which is apparently from NE Thailand. It was super hot, with no sauce to help cool it. She loved the flavours, but had to bring half it home, to enjoy with some yoghurt on the side. We will go back there.
