   The food was delicious. The Duke’s fish melted in your mouth. The surf and turf was flavorful. The veggies were tasty. Sadly we went an hour before sunset and were roasted and blinded by the sun. For over an hour we had intense sun on our face for 3 of the 4 people. It took away greatly from the experience. The table was too small for 4 and dishes were not removed making it a logistic nightmare on how to eat. It’s so difficult to be critical because the food was amazing and the waitress was very friendly. She was just too busy and couldn’t control the table size or the intense direct sun. I am very disappointed because I made the reservation weeks ahead of time and got the worst seats. All other tables were out of the sun 30 minutes prior to our. This is not the first time it has happened. In May of last year we all went home with intense sunburns from dining outside at Duke’s. I thought there would be cloud cover but there wasn’t.

   Prepare for a brief wait if you reserve but this location is excellent and the food was great. Highly recommended. Make sure to reserve in advance.

   Duke’s was better than expected during our April visit. We were surprisingly seated outside on a gorgeous clear evening with a great view of the water, and we had two heaters by us that were working. I was still cold but that is usually always the case with me, so dress prepared if you dine there and sensitive to cold. Our server was very helpful, engaging and attentive. I had a special request for my meal selection and the chef was able to accommodate me perfectly, with a Caesar salad, dressing on the side, topped with ahi tuna. Our group shared delicious calamari which was served differently from what we’ve seen before. The tuna steak was fabulous and very spicy hot, however our server gave us a heads up about that before ordering. Two others in our party had the mahi mahi which was also fabulous. A great way to bring our trip to San Diego to an end.

   I needed a special local place for a VIP lunch and asked for a specific table a few weeks before the day. They accommodated and were spot on with service, food and a spectacular view of the cove.
