The owners of Étoile Cuisine et Bar, Chef Philippe Verpiand and Monica Bui, have created an inviting, warm European environment where both traditional and seasonal French food are front and center. "We want to dispel the notion that French food is heavy and pretentious," says the team, recently transplanted to Houston from San Diego, where they owned the famed Cavaillon Restaurant. Everything about Étoile Cuisine et Bar, from the inviting outside facade to the intriguing interior design to the high quality service, is meant to convey a feeling of truly being in France. With Chef Philippe's take on a seasonal menu using a French technique, it's a place where fine food lovers come together, not on a special occasion, but to enjoy every day.

    Etoile is our go to place for special occasions. We dined there on Feb 20 and it was as good as ever. Good wine selection, nice specials - I had lamb chops that were outstanding - and attentive but nonobtrusive service. We ate at the bar which we like to do and the bartender was fun and engaging. I highly recommend it.

    One of our top favorite establishments in Houston. The waiters (we had Artan last night) are just excellent; food is also great (sole almandine and roasted lamb ribs); service is prompt and sharply done. Very attentive staff.

    We love Etoile for special occasions such as this one. The Valentine's menu was fantastic. I had the Foie Gras (torchon) and the Pappardella w/ truffles. My partner had the Bisque and Filet. Everything was done to perfection. We swapped desserts because she loves chocolate and I preferred the meringue. We were looking forward to a nice romantic evening... When we arrived (6PM) we were brought to the "back room" to a table RIGHT next to the kitchen where we were in the path of the servers getting the food to serve. We asked for another table by the wall, away from the kitchen counter and were graciously accommodated. All good. And this is where it's difficult to blame Etoile - but a few minutes later, a group of three diners were seated right behind us, and they were LOUD! The "gentleman" was excessively loud and we're not there to listen to people's life stories blared in the room. It never stopped! They were still there when we left. It's a shame that a wonderful culinary experience was marred by the behavior of other patrons. All the other diners around us were very quiet and spoke at normal conversation levels. So next time (if there is one...), we will request a table in the main front room where we've had very nice experiences in the past.

    Love the restaurants’ consistency - the Sole Meunière ALWAYS tastes delicious and Mushroom Ravioli and AMAZING sauce is always spot on! I tell a lot of people it’s the hidden jewel of Uptown Park.

    Most of the food of our party was very good, but the boeuf tartar was impossible to eat. There was so much vinegar that my stomach started to burn after the third bite. Then, the sole almandine was swimming in butter and stole any flavor the dish might have had. End result: a very expensive indigestion!
