REX at The Royal provides guests with transformed southern fare, a full bar, daytime cafe and curated bottle-shop housed in the historical Royal Theatre, known as a staple in the rich cultural history of the City of Philadelphia for its role as a hub for Black culture and artistry, including film-making and live music, during the 20th century. REX at The Royal, now operating out of the newly-renovated theatre, maintains key tenets of the historical site including a stage for live music performances, as well as sweeping arches and other details sustained from the original design. We were on 1526 Sansom St. for 14 years and then moved to 1300 South St. We create gourmet Afghan food that you can find in Afghanistan or here at our Philadelphia location. We have mouthwatering flavors starting from our bread to our kabobs. Our bread's recipe and technique have been passed down from the founder's great-great-grandfather, who owned an array of bakeries and managed many restaurants in Kabul. Passed through generations to our chef, who brought delicious meals to 15th and Sansom of Philadelphia. Then from 15th and Sansom to 1300 South St. We have delectable food that you fall in love with and will bring comfort to you, from our meat lovers to our vegans. La Viola just hits the spot and the BYOB is a bonus. This is our 2nd year going for Christmas Eve. Reservations recommended- there are only about 10 tables. Bread and dipping oil immediately graces the table. Two of us ordered one of the nights specials. Never felt rushed. Comfortable go to spot that really is just a perfect dinner out.

We had an amazing meal here with a party of 8 including 2 little kids and 2 tweens. Great quiet space with large windows for people watching. The food was amazing. Everyone enjoyed their meals even our picky eaters and their desserts were exceptional. We appreciated the good service too and kind staff.

We just found this gem in the last month and have already been more than half a dozen time, The food is fresh and delicious. The owner, Tom, is so kind and welcoming and the staff is very sweet.
