Earlier still, in the 1700s, Elias Hughes operated a tavern for whalers on this site. It was the first tavern in Cape May. On December 28th, 2024 we had an excellent dinner at The Washington Inn. My wife had roasted wild mushroom soup, baked escargot, and the colors of the garden salad. I had 2 oysters and seafood cioppino. For dessert we shared Bananas Foster. All the food was excellent along with the service. This restaurant exudes old time Cape May quality and I am sorry we have not dined here more often. The bill came to $150 including tip.

Food is consistent and quite good. We have eaten here the last several years during Christmas and have enjoyed it. As with most dining establishments: the prices have been raised significantly and a party of four is quite the bill. BYOB policy certainly helps.
