Nestling in the heart of the beautiful Kentish Weald-the Garden of England, the Star and Eagle Hotel is located in the village of Goudhurst. Standing over 400ft above sea level, there are outstanding views of the surrounding orchards and hop gardens for which the area is renowned. Dating back to the 14th century, the Star and Eagle has played a significant role in the local history, and was once reputed to have been an ancient monastery. Relics of the vaulted stonework of the period are still visible in some parts of the building. During the 18th century the Inn became the headquarters of the "Hawkhurst Gang", who robbed and terrorised the surrounding district, and planned smuggling raids. Today, behind its attractive timbered gables, the Star and Eagle offers all the comfort and facilities of a 20th century hotel with the charm and atmosphere of a bygone era. Open throughout the year, the Star and Eagle is less than three miles off the main A21 road with easy access.

In addition to the food, we offer a selection of fine wines, quirky cocktails, and have a collection of over 25 craft gins available.World War I poet Siegfried Sassoon lived in Matfield and is the inspiration behind our name. Sassoon was awarded the Military Cross for "conspicuous gallantry" and later won acclaim for his writing. We're pretty sure he would have loved our food too!A warm welcome awaits diners from General Manager and Director Tom Haacke and his team. We are a country Gastropub owned by farmers. Our farm supplies the beef, lamb and pork and we source other ingredients from local producers where we can. Our small seasonal menu changes regularly reflecting what is available in our area. We pride ourselves on being very much a country pub, offering freshly prepared seasonal food and a warm welcome. Believed to date back to the 17th century the Horse & Groom was originally used to house local farmer workers, with the increase in horse drawn traffic using the old Hastings Road the property was utilised to offer weary travellers a place to rest and stable their horse ready for their onward journey. It then, and has to this date, become known as the Horse and Groom .​ Free of tie, the pub now offers the traditional country pub fair, set in the glorious surroundings of Rushlake Green, with its picturesque village properties encircling the village green, centre of the villages attraction and host to many winter and summer events.     I work for the NHS and brought a colleague of mine to have Brunch. Food was great and order taken efficiently but from then on no one asked was everything was ok. We would have spent more with additional coffee/tea and maybe a nice piece of cake. So you missed opportunity of selling to us it wouldn’t have taken much ! All I said we did have a lovely time but will did feel once we had our meal served no one came to see if we would like anything else . We would have spent a lot more as the food we had was really good

    Absolutely could not have been more perfect. The service was impeccable and we were made to feel most welcome. Food was wonderful - really good quality and quantity. We were hugely surprised by an unexpected Happy Birthday plate of strawberries, cream and a cupcake for one of our party whose birthday it was on that day. Really made his day and ours...as we had not told the not the birthday when booking. Staff could not have done more to make the meal very special.

    Service was professional but good humoured. Food was outstanding. Lovely setting although a little chilly for our lunchtime dining but it was a really cold morning. Expensive but this is not gastro-pub food.

    Bit cold when we first got there as fire wasnt drawing properly. Only had the soup but other courses looked good and reasonable prices
