The Lexington is more than a restaurant, it’s an institution. Located on the corner of Lexington Parkway and Grand Avenue, this St. Paul community was the most fashionable at the turn of the 19th century. The St. Paul elite lived just blocks away and the first electric trolley brought visitors up and down Grand Avenue. The Lexington opened in 1935, after the end of prohibition, and was a popular neighborhood bar to gather and socialize. Previously operating as a speakeasy, the expansive wood panels were perfect for hiding a little booze and one can only imagine the shenanigans going on beyond the hidden staircase behind the coat check. Wonderful spot for our Christmas gathering. Our wait staff was a great guy who was very attentive. Each of us enjoyed our menu selection. I got a gift card plus bonus card for next year!

We made plans to visit Axel's last Friday. From the time we arrived we were met with friendly and welcoming staff. The hostess who greeted us with a smile and guided us to our table (and offered coat check service, nice touch) to the personable server who's knowledge of the menu made it easy to choose from many of the enticing dinning choices. We also ordered some bar services as well and the beverages were well mixed smooth and flavorful.

The food was good. It is expensive, and it was a little disconcerting when our waiter rolled his eyes when asked to box our one leftover. Valet was not available at the end of the evening (within the closing time) and we were told to find him in the lot in a car with lights on. The only car I could find was a couple making out. Clearly not our valet. And then he was rude. Disappointed.

Food was delicious. Decor was interesting. Service staff was very nice, though slow to grab our order initially. Definitely a unique and fulfilling menu with the environment to match.
