The 1740 General Stanton Inn was named best new restaurant in Southern Rhode Island. Guests delight in traditional Rhode Island cuisine with emphasis on fresh local seafood-- Oysters, clams, calamari, swordfish, shrimp, scallops and our signature dish, Portuguese Cod. Our friendly bartenders excel at making Martinis, Old fashioneds and craft cocktails. Local craft beers are on draft, and the wine list is comprehensive. Located in the beach community of Charlestown, Rhode Island, The General Stanton is the quintessential New England Inn with charming colonial architecture which dates back to the 1700's. The Inn is rich in history having hosted George Washington and three US Presidents. The Inn was a stagecoach stop, underground railroad safehouse and an illicit gambling house in the roaring 1920's. Situated within the Main Lodge at The Preserve Sporting Club & Resort, Double Barrel Steak offers both the public and overnight guests a rustic, inviting setting to enjoy modern American steakhouse-inspired cuisine. The seasonal menu is thoughtfully curated to provide an engaging and memorable dining experience. In homage to Rhode Island’s 'Ocean State' moniker, the restaurant features 'ocean steaks' such as swordfish, halibut, and tuna. Additionally, game dishes will appear seasonally, reflecting The Preserve’s outdoor spirit. For gentlemen, collared shirts are required, and no shorts or flip-flops are permitted. Double Barrel Steak is open to the public.

Dine in one of our custom designed Igloos By the Sea at The Coast Guard House. There is an igloo rental fee for $100 for three hours. Each igloo is outfitted with a Bluetooth speaker, fireplace and heater. However, we do recommend dressing warmly and/or in layers. Our full menu is available for your enjoyment. We can not guarantee any specific igloo. Igloo reservations can be cancelled in inclement weather. There is a credit hold for $20 per person to complete your reservation. Your card will only be charged if you cancel a week or less or do not honor your reservation.

    Our party was greeted at the door and promptly seated. Definitely need a reservation here. The layout had a number of floors with small dining rooms on each. The ambiance was cozy - roaring fires, natural holiday decorations, soft lighting. The noise level was moderate - conversations happened easily at normal talking volume. The wine list was extensive, while the beer offerings were lackluster. The menu focuses on New England cuisine with many heavy, warming dishes. We visited during December, so it’s possible they have a different seasonal menu for the warmer months. Our server was attentive, but not annoying.

    Menu is extensive and varied. Food is exquisite and well prepared. Wait staff is attentive but does not hover. Setting is very elegant. Restaurant is pricey but worth it. Recommend it for a special occasion.
