Max's Café was built in 1890 as a shoe store. In 1912, 34 North Burlington Street reopened as Leisinger's Saloon for the next 25 years even through prohibition (as a "soft drink establishment"). In 1937, Leisinger's Saloon passed through the family & was renamed Max's Cafe; it’s name for the next 65 years. In 1977, a new simply prepared fresh seafood menu transformed Max's Cafe into Max’s Seafood Café. The neighboring building was acquired to seat the growing number of patrons from both sides of the Delaware River, often forming lines around the corner, waiting to enjoy fresh flounder, shrimp, clams, & most of all, Steamed Mussels! Max's reputation grew for the next 22 years before age & neglect left it in a state of disrepair. The bar restaurant closed in July of 1998 & remained dormant for 2 ½ years. Refurbished in late 2000, Max's Seafood Cafe reopened on June 2, 2001 to continue its tradition of hospitality, impeccably fresh seafood, & most of all Steamed mussels.

Entering the Saloon, a family owned restaurant since it opened in 1967 is a bit like stepping into Philadelphia's past.     Decided on The Morris after seeing an IG post and reviewing the menu and it turned out to be really good. We opted for the dining room which was very charming, but the heated courtyard looked cozy and just as good. We really enjoyed the cocktails, the food, and the service. The hostesses were welcoming and warm and our server, Clarence was just right to for us…he was a vibe. We’ll definitely keep this place in our rotation!

    Wasn’t a major fan of the crab dip but the main entree was delicious. Service & ambience was excellent, though customers at the bar had gotten a little loud which wasn’t the restaurants fault. Overall was a good experience and will definitely be back.

    As always, Chef Rucker knows how to bring it! The food, service, ambience, music and vibe were all on point. The swordfish belly app, lobster toast, hash browns, crab claws, blue fun tuna, cabbage, scallops, swordfish Milanese, sea bass, ham and squid ink biscuits and chicken were unreal. This is our third visit, and the consistency and quality were outstanding. We’ve probably had every menu item and have been enjoying the changing drinks menu as well. The matcha cocktail is a favorite, can drink it like water! The new mezcal Negroni was delish!!! You have to get the desserts. I crave them constantly now. The granola cremeaux is in my dreams.

    I enjoyed a Christmas Eve meal at the ever excellent Butcher + Singer. Everything was wonderful - from a warm welcome at check in, my fabulous, attentive server, Miss Brandy and, of course, the perfectly prepared food. Dining at Butcher + Singer is always a treat, but this particular meal will always be remembered as extra special. Thank you for another exceptional experience!

    We went on Christmas Eve for drinks at the bar with friends and then a 5 course prix fixe dinner for 2. Both experiences were fabulous. Quality bartender and the table service team was top notch: professionally urgent, menu advice, flexible to small adjustments, on top of clearing and packaging to go, no time holes in waiting for food or drinks, EXCELLENT FOOD. I am embarrassed I lived in Philly for 21 years before coming here. I have been missing out. Will definitely be back.
