Oma's Hideaway is a vibrant, maximalist restaurant inspired by the life and spirit of Chef Thomas Pisha Duffly's grandmother, Kiong Tien “Tina” Vandenberg. Her ability to adapt, to make the most out of limited resources, and to stay creative while projecting warmth and brightness is the guiding force behind Oma’s Hideaway.Born during the pandemic as a pop-up in the Gado Gado parking lot, Oma’s became a permanent beacon of iridescent light in Portland’s Richmond neighborhood in 2021. The menu draws from Tina’s life story, taking influence from the craveable, soul-satisfying hawker food of Singapore and Malaysia and “turning up the volume” with exaggerated yet balanced flavors in Chef Tom’s signature style. It was generally a really nice experience. The best thing was definitely the servers - they were super attentive and kind. The kitchen staff was really accommodative since I don't eat dairy and meat. That said, there was so much sand in my mussels. The dish tasted great, but I didn't get one bite without sand. I carefully scooped the broth, since I could hear/feel all the sand on the bottom of my plate. It was pretty off putting to be honest. My husband enjoyed his pork, but it was lacking carbs. The wine was great! It's a small, curated drinks menu that was quite interesting and delicious. If you're sensitive to noise, this is not the place. The ambience is generally nice, but it's extremely noisy and you can barely hear what the person across from you is saying, which is probably why everyone is speaking so loudly.
