Located in Portland's Old Port District, Fore Street opened in June, 1996. The interior surrounds a unique brick and soapstone hearth with a wood-burning oven, grill and turnspit; visible from most tables. We believe that good food travels the shortest possible distance between the farm and the table. Our menu changes every day and is founded upon the very best raw materials from a community of Maine farmers, fisherman, foragers and cheese makers. Most of the Maine foods are organically grown or harvested wild, each brought to us at the peak of its season. In 2002 and again in 2007, Fore Street was named by Gourmet Magazine as one of the Top Fifty Restaurants in the United States. In 2004, Chef-Partner Sam Hayward was named Best Chef: Northeast by the James Beard Foundation.

                                                Had the best experience as always. Our server Lucas was knowledgable, helpful and allowed us to take our time and enjoy the evening. Absolutely love coming here.

                                                Service was amazing, food was tasteful, and cocktails were very well presented and variety covered all palates . Overall, wish there were a little more options.

                                                One of the worst meals in recent memory. Have been here several times. This time was awful. No menu to view ahead of time. Very limited and far to eclectic offerings. The grilled squid was like eating over-seasoned wet rubber bands. Absolutely disgusting. I had what was supposed to be crab stuffed haddock. There was no crab that I could find, it had no flavor and it was hot in some places, cold in others. Clearly tossed in the microwave. My wife had Scallops and they were very average at best. For the prices and reputation this place has, it was an extremely disappointing meal all around.

                                                 The Lamb Ragu, Monk Fish and Pork Loin were amazing. Our side dishes were mighty tasty too! - Carrots, mashed potatoes and brussel sprouts. Always a treat to at Fore Street. Many thanks to the whole team!!’

                                                The food and service are on par with restaurants far more expensive. The space is fairly dark, but not to the point that it is difficult to read a menu or see your food. It is also loud, however it was not difficult to hear my wife across the table at any point. In my opinion, the ambiance is perfect. Fore Street is by far one of the, if not the best, places I have been. It is certainly the best meal per dollar I have seen.

                                                Food is delicious. Pork loin was moist and so good. Crab stuff cod was fresh and a large serving. Our server answered all our questions.

                                                Fore Street is an institution in Portsmouth. We have enjoyed the incredibly consistent hospitality culture numerous times over many years and it always delivers. It is an authentic experience unlike any restaurant in Portland. We look forward to our next visit.
