Located in Portland's Old Port District, Fore Street opened in June, 1996. The interior surrounds a unique brick and soapstone hearth with a wood-burning oven, grill and turnspit; visible from most tables. We believe that good food travels the shortest possible distance between the farm and the table. Our menu changes every day and is founded upon the very best raw materials from a community of Maine farmers, fisherman, foragers and cheese makers. Most of the Maine foods are organically grown or harvested wild, each brought to us at the peak of its season. In 2002 and again in 2007, Fore Street was named by Gourmet Magazine as one of the Top Fifty Restaurants in the United States. In 2004, Chef-Partner Sam Hayward was named Best Chef: Northeast by the James Beard Foundation.

                                                Always a treat. The food, drink selection, service, and ambiance are reliably outstanding in my experience. Adam guided us through last night's dinner and didn't steer us wrong. You pay a tad more, but you don't feel like you've been robbed. It's a classy operation.

                                                Our server Adam made our whole experience! When we mentioned we didn’t drink alcohol, he had mocktails suggested and helped us navigate through the menu - confirming with the chef that everything we ordered was safe for us. Food was excellent as always, we did go on Saturday night so it was loud and busy. Support staff, managers were very friendly and professional!

                                                Adam did an excellent job serving us. He greatly enhanced the experience with his expert knowledge of the menu choices and excellent recommendations. He was very friendly, attentive and kind.

                                                Best meal of my life. I didn’t know a waffle could be so good until I had the buttermilk waffle with the (delicious) foie gras. You should open for breakfast and sell that.

                                                When you're looking for something different, something delish and a staff that pays attention to all of the little details then you have a winner at Fore Street in Portland, Maine! Last evening my family and I enjoyed an incredible and memorable dining experience there which was, in no small way, facilitated by our server Sarah. Efficient and friendly though not overbearing. There for every little thing we required though not hovering. Thoughtful, helpful and patient with all of our questions (you're going to have questions I promise!) and remarkably composed through it all on a very busy Tuesday night. Many thanks to all of the staff at Fore Street for helping to make the evening a very memorable one. You have turned us "first timers" into regular visitors for sure!!
