Hugo's Frog Bar & Fish House opened its doors in February 1997 in the heart of Chicago's Gold Coast neighborhood, next to sister restaurant Gibsons Bar & Steakhouse. Over 20 years after owners Hugo Ralli and Steve Lombardo set out to open the city's finest seafood restaurant, Hugo's continues to be the destination for premier east and west coast oysters, crudos, frog legs, lobster and seasonal fish and shellfish, in addition to Gibsons Prime Angus and Gibsons Grassfed Australian steaks. An extensive wine list, classic cocktail list and selection of impressive signature desserts accompany the menu of fresh seafood, steaks and chops. As we overheard the manager say, “we bit off more than we can chew.” Over crowded, understaffed. It took 45 minutes just to put an appetizer in. Once we ordered our meal for 3 people, we waited an hour for it to come with no communication from our server. This used to be one of our favorite restaurants. I think we are good on it for awhile.

Hugo’s was packed last night. We were seated a few minutes late but we ended up in a booth. The server and staff did a great job with attention to detail. The staff was completely on game. The general manager stopped and chatted a bit despite an estimated 860 reservations for the night. The sautéed frog legs and escargot were prepared to perfection. We all ordered fish dinners with each cooked perfectly and served hot. All things excellent!

Food and service were good. The entry way to the host stand was chaotic and very irritating to deal with. There is no room to wait conveniently, so everyone is standing trying to avoid bumping into each other. Not sure why there is always this issue when we go there, doesn't make for a relaxing dinner experience.

We frequent the bar at Hugos but rarely dine in. We decided to treat ourselves for Christmas Eve this year and had a great experience. The food was delicious, came out hot, and was served at a perfect pace. We were given the time to enjoy the evening and not feel rushed. Our waiter, Sean, was amazing. We will request to be seated in his section next year!

Honestly, this was a disappointing visit. The raisin read was stale, the pumpkin risotto under the scallops was bland, and when Iwent to the restroom, someone took my 1/2 full vodka soda drink!

We were seated in an outdoor space that was enclosed and had heat lamps. This was not indicated when I made the reservation. Ruined the experience. Don’t book this restaurant unless you call and ensure you are seated in the dining room.

While most of my dining at Hugos has been good, this time I just can’t give more than an average rating. It’s the holidays so I’m assuming this is why our lunch was just ok due to the food being warm not hot and them running out of ground beef so no Hugo’s burger! We should have been told before ordering that we couldn’t order the burger very disappointing.
