Visited Jack Astor’s at Yonge & Bloor for what was supposed to be a special celebration for my nephew’s birthday, but it turned out to be the most frustrating dining experience I’ve ever had. Before we even got to the main course, our waiter approached us to ask if we could settle the bill because his shift was ending. I explained that we hadn’t been served the main course yet, were planning to order more drinks, and wanted cake and coffee to complete the celebration. He offered to transfer our table to another server but mentioned he would lose his tips. Feeling bad for him, I agreed to settle the bill for what we had ordered up to that point. He thanked me and assured us we could continue to order from the new server and settle with them later.
After that, we waited 40 minutes with no service—no drinks, no desserts, nothing. To add to the frustration, the waiter who claimed his shift was ending at 9 p.m. was still there, lingering around but never returned to our table or checked in on us. We ended up leaving without properly celebrating my nephew’s birthday. Before leaving, I asked to speak with the manager to share my disappointment, but it was clear that this restaurant’s service and management are far from customer-focused. Also, if the restaurant is open until midnight, why would a server’s shift end at 9, and why was he still there after claiming to be done?
This was hands down the worst dining experience I’ve ever had. I will never return to this restaurant again. I would strongly advise against going there if you’re looking for good service or a pleasant experience. Such a disappointment!
