Since 1746, the building that houses this tavern has played a part in the establishment of our nation; first as a respite for stagecoach travelers expanding westward and later as a covert rendezvous point for George Washington, Marquis de Lafayette, and other leaders of the American revolution. It is believed that during the infamous winter of 1777–1778 at Valley Forge, a major figure in the Continental Army, master military mind Friedrich Von Steuben, designated the tavern as a secret black powder munitions stash for Continental Army couriers. All the while, the tavern continued to provide food, shelter and cheer to the hungry, weary soldiers fighting for their independence. Today, we honor our historic tavern’s tradition with a mission to raise the spirits of our guests. Our family enjoyed a wonderful Thanksgiving this year at the Desmonde. Everyone from my 91yo Mom to my vegan 25yo neice and all the rest of us really enjoyed the food. The price was reasonable and it was so nice this year to skip the grocery shopping, housecleaning, table setting, food prepping & cooking and especially the cleanup at my home like all the years before. We all said we would do it again.

Always a good choice. The food is reliably very good and it’s always a fun night. Very good waitstaff. Sushi is always the highlight. It’s been in our regular rotation since it opened, but it has lost a bit of its specialness over the years.

Met up with a longtime friend for a long overdue lunch. We chose The Refectory since it was mid way between our two homes. This was the first time each of had dined there and the experience was very enjoyable. Food, service, and atmosphere were all great. Definitely a return visit will be in the works.
