It was the 1930s and Six Mile and Conant was like any street corner in Detroit… people walking to the market, neighbors helping neighbors, and friends meeting at the local gathering spot now known as Buddy’s. Buddy’s existed as a “blind pig,” skirting the State and Federal laws that governed the on-site sale and usage of alcohol. Booze was available there. The owner at the time was August “Gus” Guerra.

Selden Standard’s fare features flavors born in local farms, captured at the peak of the season, prepared in their wood-fired oven, and served small plates-style in shareable portions. Our authentic BBQ starts in a live-wood smoker stoked with genuine hickory logs. Our pitmasters hand-rub the meats with a custom blend of spices and cook for hours to extract the natural flavors. Located in the Corktown neighborhood of Detroit, TAKOI is known for modern Thai cooking accented with Michigan seasonality, a DIY mentality, and a penchant for local food production. As a core pillar of our mission, TAKOI operates HiO Farm which is located just a mile north of the restaurant. During the height of farm season, the restaurant highlights dishes prepared with HiO produce utilizing the techniques and flavors inspired by Thailand and beyond. TAKOI, originally KATOI, began as a food truck in 2014, evolved into an Ann Arbor pop-up, and landed as a proper restaurant at 2520 Michigan Avenue in March of 2016. After being open for 11 months, having a slew of fun, and garnering a handful of awards — including a James Beard 'Best New Restaurant' nomination— KATOI was brought back down to earth when it was subjected to arson in February 2017. The day after the fire, the rebuild began, and we opened as TAKOI exactly six months later in August 2017.

    Food was very good. Served hot, timely. Best described as small plate portions. Appetizers were the mushrooms and cauliflower.. both excellent. Sat at the Chefs counter and it was a good experience

    Matthew / Chef Nick / Alec were more than accommodating and provided and met any and every need that we had. Matthew made some excellent suggestions for dinner and mocktails that were very appetizing. Chef Nick - we thank you for assisting us upon arrival and showing us the Steak Knifes and making suggestion for the tour. Alec has done an excellent job with his team to make Sexy Steak a great place to eat / celebrate and enjoy a great meal in the City of Detroit.
