Growing up in Italy, my family cooked at home and had the most extraordinary experiences with ingredients grown in our backyard, paired with the wines my chef/restaurateur stepfather would bring back from regions throughout Italy. I fell in love with food as a child watching my stepfather, once nominated a top chef in Italy, work in restaurant kitchens and floors. Moving to California in 1991 and subsequently to Santa Monica and experiencing the Farmers Market inspired me to start Orto - Italian for “vegetable garden” - where I meld local ingredients and organic herbs grown here at the restaurant to create traditional Italian recipes. At our bar you’ll find a cocktail list created from fresh herbs and premium spirits, and our wine list focuses on sustainable and organic producers. Gjelina is a restaurant specializing in New American cuisine. Open every day from 8 a.m. until 11pm, serving breakfast, brunch, lunch, and dinner. For breakfast, try 9 grain pancakes with butter and maple syrup or warm banana buckwheat loaf with butter and jam of the day. Brunch options include Moroccan baked eggs and 7 grain porridge.     We met an old friend for a holiday dinner and had a nice Mista salad followed by delicious Bolognese pasta. Loud due to a large office holiday party taking up most of the restaurant but not usually like that. We go back quite often.

    Wonderful restaurant, great food, perfect and amazing server (Victoria), perfect service and music mixed by a DJ and a good saxophonist playing. We enjoyed our evening. there. Good atmosphere and friendy positive vibes. Meals were delicious and their vine is excellent.

    Great food for us - GF and our daughter is vegan. We all enjoyed our entrees and were delighted by the waitress who genuinely understood our restrictions. When we ordered a birthday dessert, both vegan & gfree, our waitress told us that it would be complementary since it was our daughter's birthday. The absolutely scrumptious chocolate peanut butter tart was perfect to end our evening - even came with a birthday candle lighting the way! Thanks, True Food Kitchen.
