Bar Chelou is a neo-bistro that is both a distillation of Chef Doug Rankin's broad gastronomic interests and a deeply personal expression of his individualistic style. 'Chelou' (French slang for ‘strange’ or ‘unexpected’) is both the name and unifying theme of the restaurant, which draws from a range of culinary traditions and service styles to create something personal, novel, and fun. The restaurant is located within the Pasadena Playhouse complex. If you plan to visit the Playhouse after dinner, please book a 5:30p reservation to ensure ample timing for your dinner. We also offer concession cocktails before a showing and during intermission. NEED TO KNOWWine corkage is $30 per 750ml bottle with no limit; we do not offer corkage for wines featured on our wine list. Ample parking is available on surrounding streets and at several paid lots within a one-block radius. Gift cards are available for purchase on our website.

It all started back in 1923 in a small storefront in downtown Los Angeles. 95 years later and 5 generations later El Cholo has become synonymous with Mexican food all over Southern California.Our Pasadena venue opened in 2000 and is at the Paseo Mall within walking distance of the Civic Auditorium and Convention Center, overlooking Colorado Blvd.The menu consists of classics dating back to the original menu along with an array of more modern dishes showcasing the different regions of Mexico.Four private rooms that can accommodate parties from 40-100 that allows our valued guest a memorable experience no matter the occasion.Most famously known for our Margaritas and a menu featuring over 150 Tequilas. A new elevated Mexican cuisine has landed in Pasadena. Agents Only by Pablo Salas, a casual bar/lounge concept that offers authentic Mexican flavors along with Agave spirit cocktails to pair well with your dishes. Most popular dishes are Tuna Guacamole (fresh tuna tossed in our house-made macha sauce, fresh guacamole made to order) that serve as a perfect appetizer. As well as our mouthwatering Queso Fundido that comes with either corn or flour tortilla on the side; you can add wild mushrooms or chorizo to elevate the flavors more. Of course, don't forget to try our shrimp enchilada with creamy guajillo sauce as your main dish. These are just a few dishes to mention. We can't wait for you to try!

    I’ve been to Bar Chelou a few times but they have really hit their stride. The service was on point, the drinks were fun and delicious, and the food was incredible. Every dish had an unexpected twist, from the mini peperoncinis in the salad to the tang of peanut butter in the carrots to the umami in the tempura mushrooms, lovely surprises all around! And they coursed everything out beautifully and got us to the show at the Playhouse right on time, chef’s kiss!

    We were pleasantly surprised by the quality of the food we ordered. The tortilla soup was flavorful and just the right spice level. We split shrimp fajitas and the vegetables were perfectly cooked and maintained their color.

    Innovative menu items from over 100 years. Still family operated. Attentive service for a leisurely lunch. Consistently excellent. Patio can be fun and inside has simple ambience with historical pictures on the walls. I started enjoying El Cholo over 60 years ago as a USC student.
