Callenders is a modern , casual style dining bistro. From a romantic meal for two, to a celebration dinner for forty. The best of local produce cooked to order for you. The surroundings are relaxed and easy going. Large potted plants occupy the free spaces and original water-colours by local artists hang on the walls. Table tops are bare and minimalist set with condiments, cutlery and fresh cut flower stems. Old dishes make a fresh return, and modern classics like Thai-Style Chicken sit comfortably along-side Braised Beef Cheeks with roast potatoes and gravy.Steaks are good too and a full Char-grill section on the menu features locally shot Venison and a selection of beef cuts; T bone, Fillet and Sirloin. As you would expect all desserts and pastries are made in house, with a definite focus on classic British desserts, steamed Treacle Sponge, Crème Brule, Apple Tart, Queen of Puddings and a really beautiful creamed rice dessert served with a mango sorbet are often on the menu.

Believed to date back to the 17th century the Horse & Groom was originally used to house local farmer workers, with the increase in horse drawn traffic using the old Hastings Road the property was utilised to offer weary travellers a place to rest and stable their horse ready for their onward journey. It then, and has to this date, become known as the Horse and Groom . Free of tie, the pub now offers the traditional country pub fair, set in the glorious surroundings of Rushlake Green, with its picturesque village properties encircling the village green, centre of the villages attraction and host to many winter and summer events. In showing this building some love, local businesswoman Shoes Simes has said that she hopes to help make her pub more food-led and family-friendly. In doing so she hopes to turn this local building of historical importance into an establishment for local families and friends to enjoy together. It all started 13 years ago when she first saw the building and she knew straight away that this was the pub for her and finally her dreams have come true, with a full refurbishment, this pub is now ready to be revealed to Eastbourne in all its glory. Once functioning as an old Moot Court, eventually turning into a restaurant in the 1970s, before it boomed as a pub trading as The Rainbow. It eventually changed to The Counting House and saw a new lease of life as the garden grew to be a popular haunt of all in old town. Returning with a change of name to the older style of The Rainbow, and with it a focus on food again. For outdoor reservations, please contact the restaurant directly.

Our Sunday Family Feast was excellent value for money and truly delicious! Despite skipping breakfast, the four of us couldn't manage to finish the very generous quantity of meat... highly recommended and the perfect meal to celebrate a family birthday together.

We really enjoyed our meal the food was excellent. The only criticism we have is that I have a shellfish allergy and some of the dishes that we chose we were advised would not be suitable as they were cooked in the same pan as food that cooked shellfish. We were very surprised about that with such an upmarket restaurant. One of the courses we did chose had something that was cooked in a pan that had cooked shellfish and they just left that part of the dish off which was good. We would definitely visit the restaurant again.

Visited the Ivy for my birthday and it didn’t disappoint. The shepherds pie and ginger margarita cocktail was delicious, the ambience was warm and inviting with a fabulous singer adding to the joie de vivre . Service was great and I was treated to a special birthday chocolatey profiterole. Will definitely be returning.

Interesting and beautifully presented food without unnecessary foams and gimmicks. The perfectly cooked vegetables balanced well with the pheasant. The latter possibly just a little overdone was rescued with a tangy jus. This was the calm before the storm of valentines so we had intimate service fresh flowers on the table and a good wine at a reasonable price. My highlight was the surprise of our delicious apple tart being flambéed at the table ..thank you
