The Poet offers an informal yet refined dining experience in the heart of the Kent countryside. Set in a charismatic 16th century building, diners can expect food of the highest standards, made using the finest local and seasonal produce and lovingly prepared by a small team of chefs led by Head Chef & Director Lee Adams. In addition to the food, we offer a selection of fine wines, quirky cocktails, and have a collection of over 25 craft gins available.World War I poet Siegfried Sassoon lived in Matfield and is the inspiration behind our name. Sassoon was awarded the Military Cross for "conspicuous gallantry" and later won acclaim for his writing. We're pretty sure he would have loved our food too!A warm welcome awaits diners from General Manager and Director Tom Haacke and his team. We look forward to seeing you!Please be aware we do not cater for the vegan diet. Late cancellations - £20 per person.

Nestling in the heart of the beautiful Kentish Weald-the Garden of England, the Star and Eagle Hotel is located in the village of Goudhurst. Standing over 400ft above sea level, there are outstanding views of the surrounding orchards and hop gardens for which the area is renowned. Dating back to the 14th century, the Star and Eagle has played a significant role in the local history, and was once reputed to have been an ancient monastery. Relics of the vaulted stonework of the period are still visible in some parts of the building. During the 18th century the Inn became the headquarters of the "Hawkhurst Gang", who robbed and terrorised the surrounding district, and planned smuggling raids. Today, behind its attractive timbered gables, the Star and Eagle offers all the comfort and facilities of a 20th century hotel with the charm and atmosphere of a bygone era. Open throughout the year, the Star and Eagle is less than three miles off the main A21 road with easy access.

We are located in the wonderful village of Groombridge. Just a stones throw from the iconic Groombridge Place and only a 10 minute drive from Tunbridge wells Our is also available for hire and we have an amazing private space perfect for celebrations. There are plenty of activities on our doorstep with wonderful walks and the picturesque Forest Way trail close. Groombridge also benefits from having Harrisons Rocks for keen climbers and the perfect cycling routes across the Ashdown Forest. If this all sounds too energetic then just relax and chill watching the cricket from our front terrace, perfect for a lazy weekend afternoon.

We have been to The Poet a few times now and on every occasion we have enjoyed it immensely. Tom and the team take great care to ensure that all our food requirements are met and they go above and beyond with attention to detail. The atmosphere is always convivial and the food is outstanding. There's a very nice wine list too.

Our Christmas dinner at Essence was perfect in every way. The food was absolutely delicious and perfectly served. The staff were very warm and friendly. All the thoughtful little extras were much appreciated. Everything was memorable and special and we may make this a family Christmas tradition!

We had a lovely lunch here- their service was particularly stand out as the manager and our waiter were both very helpful and attentive. The food was very good, as we would expect from a Cote!

Overall it was very nice but we didn’t understand why the waiter told us we couldn’t have the champagne that we had selected to have with our afternoon tea and could only have Prosecco. It was an option on the menu however, they were unable to serve it to us. The waiter mumbled something, we thought he said they couldn’t open a whole bottle of champagne for two glasses.
