Centered in the heart of Los Angeles, the historic building in which it resides was originally erected in 1929 by Charlie Chaplin, and later transformed into the iconic La Brea Bakery and Campanile Restaurant. République builds on this storied past, offering a gastronomic environment imbued with history and grandeur. In 1962, Johnny Harlowe made the jump from the silver screen to chef and owner of Dear John’s. Convinced by his pal Frank Sinatra, Johnny opened the iconic spot just a ways down from Sony Studios on Culver Blvd. It became the watering-hole for the Hollywood elite with Sinatra often in the corner playing the piano against the dark brick walls once lined with portraits of famous John’s. Seasoned chefs and entrepreneurs Hans Röckenwagner and Josiah Citrin have teamed up to re-open Dear John’s with an updated classic American menu and old-school cocktail list.

    Somerville accommodated us for a larger party as best they could from such a high debut demand. We were seated promptly. Service, food, drinks, vibe were all outstanding. Fantastic blessing to the neighborhood and will be patronizing Somerville for years to come.

    Thanksgiving lunch was excellent. The turkey was a bit salty but everything was delicious. The service was excellent. The drinks were great also. I wound definitely dine here again

    Food and service were fantastic. The space is a little tight for some tables especially some of the two seaters, and the valet can be a little awkward if there are already cars waiting. But we loved the food, drinks, and service so we will definitely be back! Would 100% recommend to others.

If you’re open to a truly immersive dining experience and willing to splurge, this is one indulgence that’s absolutely worth every penny. The staff was beyond incredible—gracious, attentive, and genuinely kind. They went above and beyond to make the evening unforgettable, even packing up my favorite emulsion to savor at home (and trust me, it was just as delicious the next day!).
