Very disappointing experience at Pelican Grill today. We've been a customer there for many years, and everything is usually very good. But, not today! First of all, when we arrived and were seated in our booth, the music was extremely loud and we had to request (twice) that it be turned down significantly. Then we were surprised that the bread service has changed from a delicious assortment of rolls and crackers, to a mundane plateful of Parker House rolls. BLAH!
The mushroom pizza we ordered as an appetizer arrived poorly cooked (the dough was pale on top and only partially brown underneath). BLAH! The mushroom topping was delicious. The 6 oysters we ordered (for $36!!!) were so miniscule that it was laughable, except for the exorbitant price (they were the size of a U.S. Quarter!). When I complained, the waiter apologized and brought 2 more (they were only slightly larger than the first 6). After looking at them, the waiter again apologized and said he'd remove the charge from our bill.
More mistakes were made on our main courses:
1. My burger with salad arrived without any dressing on the salad. The burger was excellent.
2. A short rib sandwich arrived with fries instead of the salad it was supposed to have. The short rib filling was a bit "crunchy" (like it had been scorched or been sitting around for too long on the range top). It took 10 minutes for the kitchen to send the missing side salad!
3. The Chilean seabass was very good.
4. The grilled salmon was very good.
When I complained to the Food Expediter, he acknowledged his kitchen had serious issues, and that he'd address them "after service today." I suggested he deal with the problems "now" and avoid more unsatisfied customers. He just ignored that comment.
Our waiter apologized again and said "we've been having problems with the kitchen for some time now."
Diners beware! This is an expensive restaurant, and the poor kitchen control isn't befitting the high prices.
