REX at The Royal provides guests with transformed southern fare, a full bar, daytime cafe and curated bottle-shop housed in the historical Royal Theatre, known as a staple in the rich cultural history of the City of Philadelphia for its role as a hub for Black culture and artistry, including film-making and live music, during the 20th century. REX at The Royal, now operating out of the newly-renovated theatre, maintains key tenets of the historical site including a stage for live music performances, as well as sweeping arches and other details sustained from the original design. REX at The Royal cuisine pays homage to the great early 20th-century African-American chefs who adapted traditional southern fare to Philadelphia’s urban landscape.     Great food and music. Service was a tad slow for a Wednesday night with empty tables around us, but that wouldn't deter me from returning. Fried lobster, crab tater tots, and gumbo were delicious. I highly recommend those. Brussel sprouts were very good. Beet salad was okay. I ended up taking that home and adding some goat cheese crumbles to it. The beet salad needed something more for me to thoroughly enjoy it, but the beets themselves were very good. The cheese I added at home gave it the pop I needed. The key lime parfait was also okay. It was more like a key lime pudding overall, despite the graham cracker crust underneath, which had great flavor. I think of a parfait with more evenly distributed layers, but it was a huge amount of key lime pudding, a thin layer of graham cracker crust on the bottom and a nice dolop of whipped cream on top. It was okay, but just not my idea of a traditional parfait. Hopefully the service next time is a little quicker, but I will definitely return.

    I had a nice Tea time with friends today. The 3 tier tea sandwiches and scones are all delicious. We will be back for sure!

    Went out for a girls night and it was the perfect place to be! The margaritas were the best part of the night! The tapas were delicious!
