Their first restaurant together, owners Lien Ta and Chef Jonathan Whitener opened Here's Looking At You in 2016. Named a "Restaurant of the Year" by Food & Wine Magazine and one of Eater National's "38 Most Essential Restaurants," HLAY was also the subject of author Patric Kuh's "Becoming a Restaurateur." After four magical years as a small independent restaurant, COVID-19 would force its forever closure. But 17 months later, fate would have it that the community would come together to help resurrect this very special restaurant.     Extremely pretty setting. Exterior dining is set with fairy lights and foliage with banquettes and tables linen set. Well heated too. Inside has different height candelabras in high ceilings, dimly lit for that romantic/ comfortable vibe. Service was spot on. Informative, friendly, not intrusive. Food great, reasonable prices, many choices. Would recommend.

    Delicious food — the uni panna cotta, sprouted broccoli salad, and branzino were all EXCELLENT. But don’t sleep on the bar program — HLAY consistently has some of the best and most UNIQUE drinks I’ve ever tasted.

    From the moment we walked into JOEY DTLA, everything was top-notch. The atmosphere was vibrant, the food was incredible, and the service truly made the experience unforgettable. Daniel took care of us and delivered A1 service from start to finish—attentive, personable, and professional. He anticipated our needs before we even had to ask and made great recommendations. Can’t wait to come back!
