Poppies in Hanbury Street was Pop’s first restaurant and the one where the journey began. The retro-diner and takeaway is close to Pop’s heart as it brought 70year old Pat out of retirement. Pat 'Pops' Newland has been serving authentic British fish and chips in London since 1945, and from this he has recreated a restaurant serving one of Britain's best-loved dishes in a friendly setting, surrounded by authentic 1940s/50s memorabilia lovingly curated by Pops himself. Our menu includes sustainably-caught mouth-watering fresh fish cooked in crunchy batter, served with golden chips and classic mushy peas, prepared on the premises by our onsite fishmonger. Tired of the loosely French inspired humdrum of restaurants popping up across the city of London? Do you like holidays? Do you like cold drinks and warm service? The idea came from a mirror in an antiques market and a love for a more informal approach to dining, the result is a chippy in North London with old church pews bolted to the walls to be leaned on and eaten from. We have visited this restaurant many times for family celebrations and other events. The food is always exceptional, matched by friendly , courteous, informative and helpful staff. Good wine list and lovely decor , I can never find fault with anything here . I would highly recommend Smiths, it’s not cheap but this restaurant is a great example of you get what you pay, all round great place for excellent fish and seafood.

Best plaice that I have had for a long time. Batter very tasty and plenty of ‘meaty’ fish flesh. Fresh and hot … could not eat all the chips!!
