Soothr, properly pronounced “Sood” is the Thai word meaning “Recipe”. This East Village establishment is the vision of close friends who grew up in different regions of Thailand, hoping to share their experiences and recipes with the rest of the world. Raised in distinctive regional cities, each individual brings their own unique relationship with Thai cuisine, with a specific focus on the generational family recipes that have shaped their childhood and time growing up in Thailand. Zaab Zaab’s co-owners proud natives of Queens, opened their restaurant in the heart of Elmhurst’s Little Thailand in April of 2022 just before Songrkan, or Thai New Year. The destination for authentic Isaan cuisine from Northeastern Thailand has received numerous accolades, including a 3-star review from Pete Wells of The New York Times, and being listed two years in a row on the NYT’s 100 Best Restaurants in NYC as well as being nominated as a semifinalist in the Best Restaurateur category for the 2024 James Beard Foundation Awards. Zaab Zaab is also recognized as a Michelin Bib Gourmand restaurant.

 Wei and Chunton a proud Thai-American who has been in the restaurant business for decades have been working together since 2018, when they opened a restaurant in Sunnyside, Queens, which was destroyed in a five-alarm fire.

Top Chef contestant Leah Cohen's Pig and Khao (68 Clinton Street) on the Lower East Side. The Southeast Asian inspired cuisine offers a variety of Thai and Filipino influences on the menu including Crispy Pata and pickled mango salad (pork shank cooked in soy sauce and five spice garnished with coriander, crispy garlic served with a secret family recipe sweet and sour liver dipping sauce), Grilled Pork Jowl and Brussels Sprouts Salad (chili lime fish sauce, shallot, herbs and toasted rice) and Crispy Pork Belly Adobo (Szechuan peppercorn, coconut vinegar, soy sauce, bay leaves, crispy garlic, scallion and soft boiled egg). 11 Tigers is New York City’s first-ever speakeasy with a Thai heart and a Japanese soul. The marriage of these two culinary cultures is reflected in our menu, which includes small plates like Crying Tiger Gyoza and Thai Larb Tuna as well as larger dishes like 11 Tigers Tom Yum Ramen—tonkatsu ramen with jumbo prawn—and Black Panther Curry, squid ink fettuccine in makrut lime scented Thai Panang curry topped with seared ribeye steak.

“My original thinking when we opened the restaurant was to serve the local Thai community in Elmhurst,” says Chunton. “Clearly I underestimated New York City’s appetite for Northeastern Thai food. We now have five locations across Queens, Brooklyn, and Manhattan and are so proud to represent Thai food and culture in New York City.”

    Love the Kao Soi, the wings, the fried brussels - really everything we ordered was delicious - as always!! Pig & Khao is a go-to for me. Every time I bring friends here they are always impressed by how good it is, and what good a value! This is a true neighborhood gem!!

    We came to this place under the premise that the food was outstanding based on the Michelin rating and social media touting that the food was comparably to that in Thailand…..this was the reason we booked. The service was lovely, everyone friendly and attentive which is always appreciated. The shrimp pancake appetizer was an interactive delicious experience. The rose quartz drink I had done virgin and enjoyed. The shrimp pad Thai was delicious, noodles done well, very tasty. The Wagyu pho was recommended and underwhelming honestly. We enjoyed both of the desserts we ordered, the crème brûlée and mango ice cream served with sticky rice….this was a highlight for us. Would I say Value….Probably Not.

    Hidden neighborhood gem with great food, excellent drinks, and a unique, comfortable atmosphere. Very happy our original option was no longer available when we went back to secure a reservation!
