My friend and I really enjoyed dinner at Aesop in Richmond. The setting is beautiful, atmospherically lit and the food was good to very good. We started with a quince sour cocktail, which was ingenious and delicious, followed by an excellent pumpkin soup. In my opinion, the whole experience was somewhat let down by the main course. The beef pie was served in one big dish which was passed around and from which all 10 diners seated around the communal table helped themselves. Perhaps if you come as a group of friends, this is fun, but for the price we paid I thought the dish and the presentation were a bit too casual. Pudding picked up the tone again and was excellent. Overall, a lovely evening, but the bill was higher than I had expected and if I had known about the communal table experience, perhaps I wouldn't have booked this.
