Kramerbooks & Afterwords Cafe, opened in 1976, was the first Bookstore/Cafe in the country to feature Dinner, Lunch, Breakfast, Brunch & Late Supper as well as offering complete bar service, 18 drafts and wine by the glass and bottle. Since its inception, it has established itself as "Washington's pre-eminent café.'

Service average - waiter had attitude. Food was overly seasoned and not in a good way. Like a jar of pepper fell into it. Had a better experience last year.

Avoid the mushroom “lasagne”. It was a few sparse noodles & mushrooms drowning in a bowl of god awful pasta sauce topped with some round slices of cheese. No layering, just liquid. My friend that ordered it joked that it was “sweater weather.” And then really wanted half my pizza. Who passes pappardelle soup off as lasagne?

Pretty good! Had to send a pizza back because forgot burrata, and steak frites ordered were a bit too done for medium, but overall great!

Our waiter was incredibly rude to us - I just asked for the poached eggs to be put on the side of my breakfast order and he rolled his eyes and exhaled loudly, like I had made the most inconvenient request. He also huffed and puffed through the rest of the order taking process. I really don’t understand what his issue was. He seemed like he was in an exceptionally bad mood and didn’t want to be there, which is fine, but also welcoming ppl to your establishment and taking someone’s breakfast order is your job…I’ve never experienced service like this. I was totally shocked.

Our recent stay in DuPont Circle resulted in not one, not two, but THREE visits to Kramers! We enjoyed dinner one night and could not resist dining twice more for their delicious breakfast. The portions are just right, the food does is innovative and tasty, the service is energetic and welcoming - and the coffee is perfect for a morning meal. We look forward to visiting again.
