We found Azura after researching tasting menus, with availability, in TO. It had good reviews so we tried it.
Food was creative and deserving of 4 stars. Service was excellent too, though we found the maître d' to be brisk with his team and getting visibly upset with them for a few delays or table service items. We found some dishes had too many flavours that landed flat when eaten together and some dishes had a mix of flavours that provided a new experience with every bite. A bit inconsistent in that regard. One of our guests opted for the up charge pasta, which included white truffles. They did not tell us what the up charge was, so we were surprised to see an additional $90 for her $148 tasting meal cost. Had she known it was 2/3 the cost of the overall meal, she would have declined. And unfortunately for her, our regular pasta was much better, which was disappointing. The last dessert, which was a house specialty of sweet mortadella. Our least favourite dish. Tasted like it was made with bacon fat, which it was.
We had specialty cocktails. They were outstanding. We also had a bottle of wine that was outstanding; from Spain and one of the less expensive bottles at $94.
Last comment is the about the plates. Every plate was so dark and the artistry of the food did not stand out, except for the very first dish. Not sure why white plates were not used? Also, for our last plate, we had an empty plate on the table while we waited for the mortadella to arrive. We turned offer the plate and saw it was from IKEA. I love IKEA but when I am enjoying a $300 meal, with drinks and tip, I honest don’t want to end the night seeing an IKEA plate.
I would give the culminating experience 3.5 stars, but since half stars are not an option, they get 4 stars. We had a good meal and great service.
