We had high expectations of the food here given its reputation. But sadly it was a little disappointing. I ordered the poached pear with walnuts and cheese as a starter. It arrived as a salad, overloaded with bitter red salad leaves on a plate that was too small. After I excavated the small amount of pear underneath, it was pleasant enough and the cheese complemented it well. My husband had the steak tartare which was well seasoned and accompanied by a few crisps. My main course was gnocchi, which I was advised were choux pastry rather than the usual potato. Intrigued, I awaited the dish with some excitement. Sadly, it was less than I hoped. The gnocchi were smothered in sauce, rendering them to a soggy dough-like consistency, with no hint of choux. The sauce and hazelnuts were pleasant enough, if rather too rich. My husband ordered the eponymous Bavette, which he enjoyed. The accompanying cabbage was nice if eaten with the melted butter. The chips were outstanding, chunky and crispy, definitely the high point of the meal. Finally, my dessert was creme brulee, which was very good. My husband ordered the pistachio tart, which was rather clunky and the rhubarb and custard ice cream was unremarkable. It was a decent meal, but not special. The service was very good and attentive.
