An exceptionally stylish supper club, civilized speakeasy, a sophisticated saloon. Each of these "personae" is housed in a soaring two-story interior distinguished by a gently curving mahogany bar, fluted columns with ornate capitals, stunning original art, plush banquettes, cozy booths, starched linens, glittering glasses, and polished flatware.
Overall, the ambiance is pure 1930's and 1940's - tasteful art moderne reminiscent of the glory days of Cunard and French Line ships. Fashionable and glamorous are the hallmarks. Trendy is simply not a part of the BIX culture.
The clientele at BIX ranges from San Francisco movers-and-shakers to "savvy travelers" - owner Doug Biederbeck's term for the many diners in the know from out of town who patronize his establishment.
All of them step from the featureless alley into another world - a world of superb cookery and libations, of sparkling service, of stylish nostalgia, of polished live jazz. That world is BIX.

    Wonderful, as always. Love the live jazz band as well. From the food menu, the wine list, the ambiance, it is a perfect spot to celebrate!

    What a beautiful evening from the cocktail at the bar until the cab arrived to take us back to the hotel! Our server was the Tops Michelle enhanced the evening. I have dined many times in the past at Bix's, but my guest had never been there and she mentioned that the evening and the restaurant was "everything "that I said it was. Great night out!

    There are SF restaurants and there are institutions. Bix is an institution. I’ve had steak tartare in at least 50 restaurants all over the world and the Bix tartare is the best. Had it for appetizer and main course! Bix is the best.

    Our waiter was extremely rude. We showed up 15 minutes late due to the traffic. We called to say we would be late and asked if it was an issue. They said “no we will see you when you get here” Upon arriving right off the bat they said we needed to be out by an hour and a half. Waiter got our drinks wrong and was visibly annoyed that he needed to fix them. Visibly annoyed when we asked for a second round. Never had felt so unwelcome in a restaurant ever. Won’t be returning again which is a bummer bc the ambience is lovely.

    As always, spectacular. I loved the Christmas decor, made it so cozy and welcoming. Our waitress, Jackie, was very accommodating to my dietary restrictions. Great drinks. Have to get the potato pillows and deviled eggs. Can’t wait to go back.
