Where to start? It's rare to find an establishment that gets it completely right: decor, lighting, music, staff, and food, glorious food, prepared with care, insight and innovation, and served with friendly flair. Blossoms is a gorgeous retreat from the norm, offering all of the above and more. Our principal server was Sarah, a delightful woman who knew her menu, kitchen and chef, and professionally represented what was to come. But wait! I am remiss! The cocktails! My wife started with a Miso-Rita, which as the menu promised was a Japanese-infused variation on the well known theme. It was delicious, with soft tones that represented the five flavours: salty, sweet, sour, bitter and umami. I went with a Lucky Cat (perfect name for the ideal drink), which stole the show. Piquant, rich, a fabulous whiskey finish with a sourish hint, it was a warm bubble bath for the palate. My only lament is how quickly it disappeared. Sarah coached us through a delightful medley of small plates, each worth taking the time to taste, analyze and savor: edamane, Japanese-style fries (the Bonito flakes were a splendid touch!), braised aubergine with soy finish, two bao buns (my wife, the remarkable mushroom version; me, the delicious crispy duck), a lovely dragon hosomaki roll, and tender stem broccoli with a tangy tahini/soy sauce so delicious I asked Sarah to beg the chef for the recipe (she agreed to share most of her secrets, but like all good chefs, not 100% of the recipe. Some secrets must be closely guarded, with complete justification.) I recommend Blossoms 100% for any occasion, a casual drink with a friend, lovers' night out, noteworthy occasion, or just a drop-in after work for a nice drink, great music and the warm embrace of staff who know their craft, their booze and food, and are happy to welcome strangers and friends alike. We'll be back. See you there. And thank you thank you thank you, staff at Blossoms, for being so genuine, friendly and welcoming.
