Caffé Greco, Melbourne’s iconic dining institution and meeting place, is reopening after three decades in Oakleigh. Its origins trace back to the inspiring story of Nick Madalena, a Greek man who journeyed to Rome in 1760, founding the original Caffè Greco, which has since become a revered national institution in Italy, celebrated for over 260 years. This tale of migration and the pursuit of a better life is what motivated Nick Zampelis to establish a Melbourne branch of Caffé Greco, continuing a legacy of cultural exchange and community that spans centuries.

As Melbourne’s own Caffé Greco reopens, it draws from this rich heritage of bringing together diverse minds, continuing the tradition of being a cultural meeting point where patrons can not only enjoy fine coffee but also engage in the kind of conversation and creativity that defined its Roman predecessor.

We were 15 of us, the whole group is not happy. 2 days before the reservation I received a text from the restaurant stating that we need to have a set menu which is ridiculous. According to them we all must have the same menu. When it comes to pay the bill, the cashier girl showed us attitudes because we spilt the bill. Never go there again.

Love this place, the service here has always been impeccable but today was exceptional Raylene, our waitress, was a breath of fresh air, her attention to detail amazing Even when the electricity went out and nothing was working she made light of the situation Will be going again that’s for sure Rosetta

The initial high expectations did not match the experience on a cold windy night the front doors remained opened which didn’t help with the ambience. The drinks and starters arrived quickly and then ! The steaks arrived cold and under cooked for a thick t-bone which was absolutely tasteless, the waitress came over and asked how was everything so I told her. The response from the manager was he agreed with my feedback couldn’t offer anything just a supplier issue. I hope this review helps management understand customers are happy to pay a little bit extra for quality and loyalty.

Cafe Greco delivers an outstanding dining experience! The atmosphere and interior design are beautifully done, creating a warm and inviting space. I had the T-bone steak, which was cooked to absolute perfection—flavorful, tender, and exactly how I wanted it. Dessert was just as impressive, with an éclair that was simply amazing. The service was friendly, welcoming, and genuinely hospitable, making me feel like a valued customer. It’s refreshing to find a business that truly prioritizes customer experience. Highly recommend!

My friend and I recently visited Cafe Greco for her birthday. It was a quiet day - Tuesday afternoon. We enjoyed a "starter" selection of three courses. Plus a champagne and white wine. The decor is lovely, the waiters are particularly nice in their white shirts and black bow ties. We loved that !. Hugo was our waiter and he was very professional and courteous. The owner/manager on the day was equally courteous. This cafe is fully licenced, ambiance is excellent and I'd recommend visiting. The bathrooms are very chic, must check them out.

Had a lovely evening , great food menu with lots of choices , great drinks menu also ! We shared lots of starters which were all delicious especially the chilli xo calamari! We managed to fit in desert and the pistachio crème brûlée was fantastic ! Highly recommend this lively place !

Food was nice .. only disappointed by our meat being served cold & our salads came out after our meat dishes were served… We found the noise level was very loud … difficult in hearing the friends sitting next to me …

Great to be back at Caffe Greco after the Chapel Street years. Warm hospitality by Nick and Denise, decor is spot on with it's European feel. Staff were attentive and friendly, our meal, Athenian Lamb was delicious, I love my saganaki, especially this version with figs on top! Thoroughly enjoyed our Saturday evening out, definitely returning!

Walked in at 5:50 and i waited alone for friends to arrive. I was seated for 20 minutes. Waiters were just chatting amongst themselves because it wasn't busy and yet not one person offered me water or asked if i wanted a drink. Just as i was about to leave, a waiter approached me about a drink. I stuck around. The meals we had were great. Great flavours and presentation. I enjoyed the Lamb giouvetsi. Great hearty meal. Authentic greek flavours. The seafood looked and tasted fresh. Big, flavourful meaty grilled Prawns. Great selection of Italian and Greek inspired meals. Enjoyable experience as the original waiter looked after us. Worth a try
