I’m deeply disappointed with my experience tonight at Cellar 55 in Amarillo, TX. Three friends and I went there to exchange Christmas gifts and enjoy some time together. While the evening started out great, things went downhill when it came time to leave.
We asked our server for to-go containers, but instead of bringing them to the table, they took our plates to the back to "plate" the leftovers. One of my friends wasn’t comfortable with that and preferred to handle it herself, but they took the plates anyway. When they returned, the containers they gave us were very small. My food fit fine, but for two of my friends, it didn’t.
When they opened their containers, they realized they didn’t have all their food. We asked the server about it, and at first, he insisted that what we received was everything on the plate. After we questioned it, he went back to the kitchen and returned with “the rest” of one friend's meal in a larger container. My concern was that the food had been sitting in the kitchen for over 10 minutes—how could it now be added to the to-go container without risking contamination?
We asked to speak with the manager, who was kind and initially offered to make a new plate for one of my friends. She then spoke with the owner, Chris, and came back to tell us she couldn’t make another plate after all. While we were fine with that because we never asked for another plate in the fist place, we still had valid concerns about how the food was handled.
When Chris, the owner, came to speak with us, he approached the situation defensively and rudely. Instead of listening to our concerns, he dismissed them until one of us asked him to lower his voice and actually hear us out. We wanted an explanation of how their food-handling process works and how they could ensure there wasn’t any cross-contamination after the food had been sitting in the back for so long. Chris kept insisting there was no contamination, but he really couldn’t provide a clear or satisfactory
