Chao Pescao is a new casual Latin Caribbean restaurant from longtime San Francisco restaurateur Rene Denis inspired by his Cuban-Colombian heritage. The name, translating roughly to “see you later alligator,” captures the friendly and fun spirit of the restaurant. Cocktails are inspired by many of the traditional drinks from Latin America, while the food pulls from the comforting Cuban and Colombian home cooking of Denis’s childhood. The menu is rounded out with other Latin American favorites with particular emphasis on dishes designed for delivery. Chao Pescao is located in the Civic Center Plaza at the heart of the city, across from City Hall.

Came in after a broadway play for appetizers and drinks. Empanadas are Amazing! Brussel sprouts delicious and the gluten free buns very tasty. Great Cocktails and I really enjoyed the vibrant decor. Only suggestion is to have more basic choices on the kids menu for those damn picky eaters

Probably the best empanada I’ve ever had, absolutely delicious. The Caesar salad was a bit sad though. Wilted lettuce and only came with three tiny shrimp. Flavor was decent though

¡Chao Pescao! was a great discovery. Needed a restaurant to go to before the Ballet. Excellent cocktails, great gluten-free options for the GF contingent... empanadas were fantastic, GF or otherwise. Less than 10-minute walk to the Symphony or Opera House. We'll be going back.

Excellent service. Good food and portion size. Seasoning could have been more robust/interesting, but maybe that is true to the cuisine type.

Service was really great. Very attentive and dirty dishes were removed quickly. Pork salad was divine, Caesar was superb and dinks were perfect.

Great food but the service was painfully slow. People around us who came in after were receiving food before us. It was 45 minutes before we even received our drinks.

The chicken sandwich was delicious! And huge . . . I brought half of it home. For dessert, I loved the shortbread cookie sandwiches with a dulce de leche filling and coconut. Service was superb. I would definitely go back. It's a great location if you are attending a performance at the Orpheum or any of the Civic Center venues.

One of those dining experiences where you think "why have I not been here sooner?" We came for lunch could not have been more pleased. Started with empanadas, then shared the Havana Salad and fried chicken sandwich, all of which is superb. A neighboring table ordered the fried chicken, which had us both looking forward to our next visit. Chao Pascao is a gem!
