WELCOME TO CLOAK & PETAL!
Where we invite you to journey into a place of both intimacy and companionship
Our concept is drawn from our name. The word “cloak” implies secrecy, inspiring our concept of a social sphere humming beneath the levels of ordinary life. “Petal” alludes to the Japanese tradition of “hanami,” when family and friends gather under blooming cherry blossoms to savor food, drinks and fellowship.
Enter our space and travel underground to décor reminiscent of an abandoned Tokyo subway, a stratum of society all its own, an artist’s dream. Cross the threshold into a mystically transformed Japanese social dining lounge which appears to be an outdoor seating area, similar to a waiting platform. Sit beneath a trellis of draping vines and teardrop lights in the intimate space we’ve thoughtfully created, and feast on authentic Japanese sushi, appetizers, small plates and drinks with family and friends.

Journey down to Cloak + Petal… and come unwind your soul.

Excellent specialty rolls, and service was perfect! Be forewarned the music is quite loud (7pm) and between that and the patrons trying to talk over it… very hard to have conversation. Still, worth the visit! Enjoyed it!!

I really enjoyed the vibes of this restaurant. Everything I ordered was absolutely divine down to the sake! The only thing that kind of rubbed me the wrong way was our waitress. She kept asking to take our menus when we were ordering something to add to our bill whenever she visited our table. Made the experience feel very rushed.

It was nice to be back after 5+ years. The sushi and cocktails were delicious! The wait staff always checked on us and kept our water glasses full. The music was so good too! I will definitely be back with my husband and boys.

The hostess wasn’t welcoming and our server didn’t come by our table much to check on us, so service really lowered our overall experience. The food is just okay, considering that there are so many great sushi places in San Diego. The design and decorations inside are pretty cool. Happy to have tried it, but won’t be in a hurry to come back.

I don’t want to provide a star rating for Cloak and Petal because I hope my first experience was just a fluke encounter. But this platform requires a rating. We arrived at 6:20 for the 6:30 reservation. The place wasn’t too crowded and were seated immediately. The menu was easy to read and my interest was piqued on several creative appetizers and sushi rolls. The atmosphere is delightful with a color cherry blossom tree in the middle of the restaurant. While waiting my partner and I tried to Shazam three songs but with limited cell phone network couldn’t access Shazam. My back was to the room so several times I turned to grab a servers attention but with no success. After about 10 minutes and finishing the glass of water I checked out the bathroom. Upon returning the hostess was refilling my glass and we reported we were ready… we had been ready which seemed like a long time. “I will let your server know.” We waited for another 4 minutes but didn’t have anymore patience. Upon exciting we paused at the hostess station but no one was there. The server may have been on a break. It’s too bad they don’t provide coverage or empower there hostess to at least take drink orders. Maybe there will be a next time.

My husband and I ordered the garlic edamame and chicken gyoza for appetizers. The garlic edamame had too much garlic, would have been nice if there were no tiny chunks of garlic because it was too overpowering. The chicken gyoza was amazing. We ordered 3 rolls, they were pretty good but our favorite was the crunchy roll. I would go back
