The Formosa Cafe is a restaurant and bar founded in 1939 and located at 7156 Santa Monica Boulevard at the intersection with North Formosa Avenue, in West Hollywood, California.

The restaurant has a long history of movie star and film industry patronage due to its close proximity to studio lot across the street, which began as the United Artists lot and was later owned by Warner Bros. Generations of movie stars such as Humphrey Bogart and Clark Gable have eaten meals at The Formosa. Frank Sinatra is reputed to have spent many nights at the Formosa in the 1950s, pining over Ava Gardner.

After a brief 2 year hiatus, a complete refurbishment, and a tremendous menu update The Formosa Cafe has returned to serve the Los Angeles community once again.

Went to Formosa for my birthday dinner and had a wonderful time! The food was delicious, particularly the walnut shrimp and short rib sesame noodles, and the servers were kind and attentive. They made the day feel special!

Excellent food! Our party of 4 shared the Orange Chicken, Pot Stickers, Brussels Sprouts, Chow Mein, and Chili Wontons. Each had very unique flavor profiles that were just so delicious and along with white rice was plenty for all. We sat in the old train car, and while it was a tiny bit cramped being 100 years old you could feel the coolness of this old Hollywood location!

I’ve been to Formosa Cafe multiple times! It’s always been a great experience. I’m in love with the Shrimp fried rice and the drinks! If you haven’t tried this LA staple. You are missing out

The Fromosa exceeded every expectation. I thought it would be a tourist trap with mid food, instead the food was top tier, skillfully done, with flavors nicely straddling traditional Chinese American and more authentic Szechuan. I expected the drinks to be overpriced and middle shelf at best, and instead the Mai Tai was the freshest pineapple based cocktail I've ever hat a restaurant, and the Matador was a sharper, more tequla forward option that was just as impressive. I expected the service to be impatient, wanting to turn tables or upsell, and instead it was attentive, careful, and completely supportive. The atmosphere I expected to be tired and overhyped, instead it was a spectacle of historic fabric so well cared-for, lovingly maintained, and immaculate that it may very well be the best vintage restaurant and bar experience on the West Coast. If you love restaurant history,.if you love an atmospheric bar, if you love good food, if you want to step back into the 1940s but minus the cigarette smoke and the canned meal, then this is someplace you will enjoy.

Great New Years Eve party! I had the Short Rib Sesame Noodles (more than generous portion) and hubby had the Orange Chicken. Cooked to perfection!! Highly recommend reservations and for drinks I suggested The Secret Garden.

I really enjoy ordering TOGo from there. The food is made to order, hot and fresh. When I went for lunch at around 1:30 a few days ago, it was pretty quiet which was good for conversation. Staff was wonderful however, the food was lacking this time in freshness and flavor especially the cauliflower which I order often. I’ll take this time as a one off.

It was a very cool experience at this historic venue our only complaint was the food came out lukewarm which was strange since it was not crowded at all but the server and bartender were great lots of personality and very fun.

Our first ever Christmas Dinner out. Thankful we were able to make reservations weeks out and we were seated as soon as we arrived. We ordered a bottle of wine, with an appetizer and a couple dishes to share. We were really surprised how fast our food came and how fresh it tasted. Our server was great and met all our needs. Our overall experience was an A+
