I'd like to preempt this review by saying that much of my comments have to do with how the experience matched my expectations (it didn't). The Peninsula and Gotham Lounge are beautiful, with excellent menus, service, and ambiance. However, having had afternoon and high tea at other establishments around the world (at Fairmont Chateau Frontenac, for example), what we got was not at all what I expected. First, the food was middling at best. It was fine, not bad but also not spectacular, what one would expect for the $185 / person price. The lounge was very noisy, with groups gathering for the holidays. There was perhaps one other table having tea, so the environment was noisy and not what I expected. I do not like to leave bad reviews, but given the cost of the tea and the experience, I would not recommend this.
This could be aided if the hotel and lounge were a bit more descriptive when listing the tea on the hotel website. It was marketed as "festive" - but there was nothing different about it from regular tea, other than the hotel decorations. Additionally, it would have been nice if it mentioned that tea would be served alongside other customers NOT paying for the same experience. All in all, I was disappointed.
