This is always a highlight of visiting Philadelphia. The food is amazing and TOTALLY Italian - most of the waiters speak fluent Italian as do I even though I am not native Italian. The wine list is extensive, the food is unbelieveable and the service beyond perfect. We were there for restaurant week and I had bruschetta, chicory salad, bucatini and panna cotta all for $40 and a great bottle of Sangiovese for $39. Not to be missed

I save "outstanding" for restaurants where there is a memorable dish, something I'll think about months or even years after I've eaten it. That's the mussels appetizer at Gran Cafe Aquila. They are so good, steamed in a spicy red sauce that I could eat as a soup. I've been getting to Philadelphia a few times a year lately and I always look forward to returning to this restaurant for the mussels. I think about them when I am not in Philadelphia, too. Everything else is good, too, sometimes great. We had the carbonara and caccio e pepe last night and both were delicious. Also a charming wait staff, perfect martini, great gelato and a nice little Italian market with lots of tempting treats to take home. It's not fancy or haute cuisine, just really good food in a fun, friendly atmosphere.

We’ve been dining at Cafe L’Aquila for years, and the food, service and ambiance always exceeds expectations. The only minor (and very minor) is the panna cotta had the texture of rubber.

Amazing experience. Everyone was super attentive. The food was great and wine selections awesome. Only thing was the egg drop soup had shells. But even though was still very good......didn't bother complaining. Occasionally shells happen....

Everything is phenomenal, but my go-to is always arrosticini. When I am missing my special town in Abruzzo, the arrosticini and Pecorino wine always fills that void.

We had a fantastic meal-started with the Fritto misto and bruschetta, followed by the agnolotti and carbonara with espresso and gelato for dessert. Our waiter was fabulous and helpful with recommendations throughout. Cannot believe we waited so long to try this place, we will definitely be back!
