I had such high expectations for Grand Brasserie and was looking forward to bringing my wife here for an afternoon lunch, but it fell short in many ways.
We ordered coffee to start and requested milk and sweetener at the time of ordering. Unfortunately, the milk and sweetener didn’t arrive until our first course came and we needed to request two more replacement coffees as the first two had gotten cold already. Also, we had to ask for milk and sweetener multiple times with multiple employees.
I ordered the steak frites from the Prix Fixe menu, which meant an $18 up charge. I can understand the up charge, but the hanger steak was about 1/4 the size of what it should’ve been. In addition, it took far longer than it should have to arrive, and the lukewarm temperature of the steak confirmed that the reason for the delay was simply because our server failed to bring it out while it was still hot. It was also slightly overdone from how I ordered it.
Paying the bill was also interesting. When offered the opportunity to add a gratuity in varying amounts ranging from 20% to 25%, it was clear that the math was off, and it appeared that I was being prompted to tip on the full amount including tax. I’m very happy to tip generously for service, but I’m not going to tip of the sales tax. This system for adding gratuities is dishonest and a pure money grab on behalf of the servers.
There were several other issues, but the aforementioned were the most glaring. If the steak had been the proper temperature, it would’ve been delicious. The coffee was great, but the way it was handled set the timing off as we would’ve preferred to have enjoyed our coffee before the meal.
This restaurant looks beautiful and the food could be fantastic is served at the proper temperature. It seems as though the primary issue here is how the staff coordinates their responsibilities as it appears that the communication between the various departments is sorely lacking.
