Step inside Il Fornaio and take a culinary journey through Italy. Early mornings bring rustic, crisp crusted bread hot from the oven accompanied by the scent of fresh brewed espresso. During lunch and dinner hours, pastas and flavorful sauces simmer while meats and vegetables roast over hot coals. Bottles of wine from small, regional wineries are uncorked to complement the dishes, which have been crafted in the custom of Italy’s chefs, bakers and homemakers. Il Fornaio means the Baker in Italian. This award-winning restaurant offers an authentic and unique Italian dining experience. Specialties include wood-fired rotisserie and grilled meats, poultry and game; housemade pastas; pizzas from an oak wood burning oven; fresh salads and housemade soups; a wide variety of desserts; and fresh baked bread made daily from scratch. Repeat winner of the Wine Spectator Award of Excellence.

The server didn’t bother coming to ask us about the food. We waited for more than 40 minutes and turned out the server forgot to bring the plates, and the food became cold.

Went today 12/25. True it was Christmas Day. True it was crowded. But my guests and I had a poor experience. Salad came out at about 10mins after ordering, which was ok. Appetizer came out at about 40 mins after ordering. Main dishes came out at about 70 mins after ordering. Our server never stopped to ask how we were doing. When I asked her every 20 mins when we could expect the remaining dishes, she curtly and with an annoyed demeanor said, "It is our busiest day of the year." But I observed her engage in lengthy conversations with guests at other tables. After our finished dishes were collected, we waited another 10 mins and our waitress did not return to bring our check. I had to ask another server who provided our check. I waved my check and credit card in the air but our waitress failed to process the payment so we could leave. So I had to wave the check in the air for several minutes before someone came by. After he returned the change, he simply stated, "I apologize." I wondered for what. For the terrible service? For being short staffed on their "busiest day of the year?" For their ridiculously slow kitchen? I will not return to find out.

The Christmas cocktails were fun and delicious. I had the sole special with lemon and capers. My friend had the shrimp special. Both were cooked and seasoned perfectly which at times isn't the case on a busy holiday in restaurants.

My family loves Il Fornaio for the ambience and food choices. We have been to LA, Irvine and San Diego places. Today’s pasta was a bit over cooked (Christmas Day), but my daughter’s salmon was perfectly cooked and so was the pizza, otherwise everything’s great, including the calamari and prosciutto appetizers.

We were welcomed and made to feel at home. The entire staff is great, and Rudy our waiter knew exactly the right way to do things. He is charming and made excellent suggestions. We will surely be regulars now.

Our waiter started out friendly but became progressively rude. He seemed upset that we did not order drinks, shared three entrees and one appetizer among four people (two kids and two adults) and did not order dessert. At the end of our meal he threw down our check and walked away and did not say usual things like thanks for dining with us or hope you had a nice meal. I would expect waiters to be courteous to all customers and not just the ones that will give them the biggest tip. Very disappointed at Il Fornaio Beverly Hills.

We have been enjoying Il Fornaio for many years. When we were renovating our kitchen, we made almost a daily visit. Same staff who we have seen for years always have a friendly greeting. Our waiter gave an honest opinion about specific menu items (instead of saying everything was great). If you are in Beverly Hills for breakfast, lunch or dinner, we highly recommend Il Fornaio. Our only criticism, they used to provide a variety of in-house baked breads. Evidently when they expanded the back room, they must have removed their bread oven. Now they charge for a basic french bread.
