Step inside Il Fornaio and take a culinary journey through Italy. Early mornings bring rustic, crisp crusted bread hot from the oven accompanied by the scent of fresh brewed espresso. During lunch and dinner hours, pastas and flavorful sauces simmer while meats and vegetables roast over hot coals. Bottles of wine from small, regional wineries are uncorked to complement the dishes, which have been crafted in the custom of Italy's chefs, bakers and homemakers. Il Fornaio means "the Baker" in Italian. This award-winning restaurant offers an authentic and unique Italian dining experience. Specialties include wood-fired rotisserie and grilled meats, poultry and game; house made pastas; pizzas from an oak wood burning oven; fresh salads and house made soups; a wide variety of desserts; and fresh baked bread made daily from scratch.

    A nice dining experience with just average food. The service was good but was not attentive (we had to wait on several requests , water, bar service). The view of the Bay was a nice treat.

    Great food, great views, great ambience and most importantly the fantastic service by Alvaro and Rosa. They help give El Fornaio a reason to return again and again!

    One of the worst meals and experiences I have had in a long time. Hostess seated us at outside table where bench was so low you needed a high chair to sit to eat. When we asked for a table w/ 4 chairs she initially refused because she did not want “impose on anyone to clean the table.” 😳 My food was horrible - overcooked pasta in what tasted like jarred sauce. My meal was cold. When I told server and asked for warm food, it came back after it had clearly been put in microwave and was scalding hot. A view is wonderful, but if food is horrible and service is bad, what’s the point? Do not eat here

    Everything was top notch! Great food, good service and beautiful views of the SD skyline. This restaurant never disappoints.

    The service in the kitchen was too slow ! It took us forever to get our main course ! Our table was so small and crowded for 7 people. Our waitress was so nice !!

    Food was fabulous and not overpriced. Our only challenge reception wasn’t rather rude about our wait. She wanted to seat us outside even though we’d requested inside restaurant. Wasn’t nice about telling when table might be ready. Everyone else was wonderful. Our waiter was exceptional. Throughly enjoyed my gnocchi and my husband’s tagliatelle with bolognese was delicious. The antipasti board could have used more bread or some crackers and cheese- very meat heavy. We enjoyed the complimentary gelato for our anniversary. Great view of San Diego harbor.

    Went there for my wife's birthday. Hostess wished her a happy birthday but was never acknowledged by waitress or anybody else again. Food was very disappointing. Definitely not up to IL Fornaio standards . Have dined in Del Mar, Beverly Hills and Carmel. Much better.

    Noah was awesome. The food was good but not awesome. We were seated near a window as requested, thanks to the hosts and servers.
