Open since 1973, Janko's Little Zagreb has become one of Bloomington's finest dining traditions as one of the best steakhouses in the Midwest. Typically we love Janko’s. Last night was OFF. We were initially sat at the table adjacent to the broken ladies bathroom where staff had to hold the handle shut so that patrons wouldn’t get locked in, which was loud/distracting/and quite honestly too close for a table to be positioned next to a bathroom door (there SHOULD be a corridor or secondary door separating bathrooms from guest tables- or a sizable distance between said immediate bathroom doors and the patron dining table. ) However, upon asking to move spots, our hostess was able to quickly at a different table cleaned off for us. Issue solved. We typically love Janko’s and brought out of town guests to have the BEST steaks in town. Sadly, my husband and I ordered a porterhouse (medium rare) as we always do because typically it’s PERFECTLY seasoned, perfectly cooked, and perfectly sized, but last night (Saturday 4/5/25) Janko’s really missed the mark on 3 fronts. Our steak was noticeably smaller than it’s ever been. (shrinflation??) It was very bland and La med that classic Janko’s seasoning we love! Finally, it was SO raw it smelled of raw flesh. Like, super inconsistent from the classic Janko’s steak experience we’ve had in the past. We didn’t make a scene or return the steak- it was moms’ weekend and we were dining with our son’s girlfriend and her mom who was in from New York, so we just kept things polite, but we were pretty grossed out. Never before have we had so unsatisfactory an experience at Janko’s. Our server was great. Sides were fine. Decor is what it is..noise level was super high- it was busy..to be expected on a Saturday. Maybe because we had an 8:00 pm reservation on Saturday, we got the last, sad porterhouse in the meat case? Just a hunch…. Hopefully Janko’s gets it right the next time. :/

Great steak and desserts. The other foods (meatball appetizer and stuffed peppers, salads and sides) were below average. Table was crowded. Service was excellent.

Very enjoyable evening at Janko’s. Alexis, our server was great (we requested her when making the reservation), food was delivered at an appropriate pace and it was delicious!!

First time I went to this place was the day before Valentine’s Day and it was super busy and pretty late. The experience was great. Got a steak and tuna and a bottle of wine. The wine list is great and there’s usually a special with a great value. The steak and tuna were both cooked perfect. It was awesome. Unfortunately last night when we went was not like this. The wine was still good and a good value but my steak was totally cooked through, no hint of pink when it should have been medium rare and other guests burger which should be MR was “a hockey puck”. He asked for it to be redone and it wasn’t done until I was through 10/14 ounces of my steak. When it came back, the bun was also totally wet from the juices and not toasted so now it’s just a ground beef patty. They did give a discount for the inconvenience but after the excellent first experience and a 200$ bill, it was pretty disappointing. I’d be open to coming back but definitely less likely to talk it up than I was after the first visit. To give credit, one steak was cooked great but at 60$ per steak, and considering meat is what they’re all about, they should be nailing it 9.9/10 times
